Joan Osborne

One of Us is een nummer van de Amerikaanse zangeres Joan Osborne, afkomstig van het album Relish uit 1995. Het is geschreven door Eric Bazillian, van de Amerikaanse rockband The Hooters.  Het refreingedeelte What if God was One of us lijkt een omschrijving van Jezus: in de Bijbel wordt immers gezegd dat Hij een gewoon mens was zoals wij (Wikipedia).

Is het lied geschreven als een getuigenis van wie God is? Of is het een twijfellied of misschien zelfs een soort parodie? Je kunt het er allemaal in horen. De liedschrijver, Eric Brazillian, is niet religieus zegt hij zelf. Hij heeft het geschreven als what if-nummer, wat als hij God zou ontmoeten, of een alien, of…-
Hoe het ook geschreven is, ik vind het een prachtig nummer. Want het zegt mij zoveel over wie God is. Toch kan je erin horen wat bij jou past, het geeft ruimte voor jouw invulling van God. Welke naam zou jij God geven? En durf je die naar hem uit te spreken?
