Marianne Faithfull

Marianne Faithfull (Hampstead, Londen, 29 december 1946) is een Britse zangeres, songwriter en actrice. Ik las haar autobiografie in 2009 en sindsdien luister ik met enige regelmaat naar enkele van haar liederen waaronder Times Square, het lied neemt je mee naar New York. De live “Blazing Away” Version vind ik het mooist, haar rauwe stem past mooi bij het rouwe leven dat ze beschrijft.

Ze zegt zelf over dit lied:
‘Times Square beschrijft mijn ervaring, het is een lied over de eenzaamheid en de leegheid de onbeduidendheid. En wat ik met name mooi vind is de zin over het machinegeweer in de kofferbak. Dat is precies wat het is om een verslaafde te zijn, het staat symbool voor iemand die de gevoelens van woede onderdrukte. En je kunt het niet zeggen, want als je iemand zou vertellen hoe je je voelde, je zou ter ‘ter plaatse geconsumeerd’ worden. En wat doet een verslaafde, en wat deed ik: ik hield het voor mezelf. Om te dealen met die woede, maar dat helpt niet, het is daar nog steeds.’

Twee keer zingt ze: 'If alcohol could take me there' wat ze afwisselt met 'if Jesus Christ could take me here'. Wie of wat haar ook maar kon bevrijden: het/Hij was welkom. Ze zou voor Hem knielen, en geen vragen hebben bij Zijn antwoorden.
