John R. Cash

(1932 – 2003

) was een Amerikaanse zanger, songwriter, muzikant en acteur.

Mijn kennismaking met Johnny Cash was bij ons thuis, mijn vader kocht de LP’s Gospel Road: A Story of Jesus, waaraan Cash meeschreef en het verhaal vertelde. Het werd uitgebracht in 1973. 
Veel van Cash' muziek bevatte thema's als verdriet, morele beproeving en verlossing, vooral in de latere stadia van zijn carrière. Hij stond bekend om zijn diepe, kalme bas-baritonstem, het kenmerkende geluid van zijn Tennessee Three-begeleidingsband gekenmerkt door treinachtige tuffende gitaarritmes, een rebellie in combinatie met een steeds somberder en nederige houding, gratis gevangenisconcerten, en een kenmerkende geheel zwarte podiumgarderobe die hem de bijnaam ‘The Man in Black’ opleverde.

‘Man in Black’ is een protestsong geschreven en opgenomen door Johnny Cash, oorspronkelijk uitgebracht op zijn gelijknamige album uit 1971. De teksten zijn een proteststatement tegen de behandeling van arme mensen door rijke politici, massale opsluiting en de oorlog in Vietnam.
Opmerkelijk: Johnny Cash schreef in zijn leven een boek met de titel, 'the man in white' een novel over de apostel Paulus.
